Day 21 - The Gift of Hope

We are on Day 21 of our Christmas Devotional. Our topic which can be found on page 85 is - The Gift of Hope.
Today’s Bible Verses:

And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.”
Luke 8:58
Jesus answered and said to him, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him.”
John 14:23
What is the author telling you today?

  1. Growing up as a "military brat", I did not live in the same house (or "quarters") for more that a few years at a time. However, I never felt without a home for Christmas. My mom always kept a few traditions alive wherever we lived. One of those was making chocolate covered cherries, chocolate covered pecans and fudge. Oh, yes! She made the best fudge. I knew I was home when I bit into that fudge. In the quote from John 14, if I am understanding it correctly, Jesus states that if a person keeps His word, God and Jesus will make Their home with him. No house is mentioned, just "keeping His word". By being faithful and following Jesus' pattern, I am creating a home for my family and for God and His Son. God is with us no matter where we lay our heads.

  2. What jumped into my mind were words from the Mercy Me song "Homesick", written by Bart Millard (I believe) after losing his father:

I close my eyes and I see your face
If home's where the heart is then I'm out of place
You've gotta give me strength to make it through somehow,
I've never been more homesick than now.

I guess we're all just passing through this life. And I think Mickie is right on target. "Keeping His word" makes our heart God's home, and that's more important than where we set down for the night. I think about our military men and women deployed around the world to keep us safe, and I pray they can feel at home in their hearts tonight and every night.
